Squirrel

Common Name: Grey Squirrel
Scientific Name: Sciuris carolinensis
Identification: As the name suggests they have grey-brown fur with a large tail which is often lighter than body. They usually grow between 1-2 feet from head to tail. Weighing 400-600 they can often be recognised by the way they sit with their large bushy tail arched over the back.
Habitat and Biology:
Living for up to 9 years the grey Squirrel is native to North Eastern America and was introduced to Britain in the late nineteenth/early twentieth century. Their success has been to the detriment of our native red squirrel. Though very common around the entire country the Grey Squirrel has adapted to city life and can be found in most parks across London. They use loft spaces to build their compact nest (drey) from a various array of materials, including wood torn off supporting beams. Danger also lies with the risk of gnawing through light wiring exposing fire hazards.
Lifecycle:
- Breeds twice a year (early spring and late summer)
- Gestation period of 40-45 days
- Young weaned for 10 weeks
- Independent and sexually mature after 16 weeks
Control:
Have you recently discovered a noisy and destructive Grey Squirrel in your Loft?
EE Control Group deal with Grey Squirrel intrusions on a daily basis- we can provide a rapid response to deal with all issues in a humane and law abiding manner.
Our first aim is to assess where the main area of activity is and ensure that no non-target species will be harmed by any of our treatments. Once we have decided the best course of action the treatment will begin. On the removal of the present population will then recommend Bio-security measures to prevent further intrusions.
